How to Download Facebook Videos from Closed Group Pages

Last updated on January 25, 2022 By TechLifeGeek 243 Comments

Have you ever tried to download a Facebook video from your Facebook closed group page and then find out that there’s no option to save it? Unlike Facebook photos that you can easily save, it can be frustrating to discover that there’s no option to save Facebook videos.  Welcome to the club!

Most of us are members of Facebook closed groups being used for family members, clubs, communities or a group of friends.  There are instances that you would want to download an offline copy of the Facebook video posted in your closed group page so you can watch it over and over or just so you have a copy in your personal storage.

Recently, we had a family event and we have a lot of funny videos posted in our closed group page that I wanted to save.  Let me share with you how you can do this.

Please note that you are NOT allowed to download any video that is copyrighted or with digital rights management. Check your local laws that may apply. This guide is only applicable for personal videos.

All you need is a computer and a Google Chrome browser

You would need only the 3 things below which most likely you already have.

  1. Computer
  2. Google Chrome Browser
  3. Internet Connection

No special software needed!

10 Simple Steps to download the Facebook video from your Facebook Closed Group Page

1 Open your Google Chrome browser, login to Facebook and navigate to your closed group page to locate the video you want to download.

2 Click on the video on your Facebook page to open it

3 Right click on the video and click on “Show video URL”. If you are unable to right click, from step 2, advance to step 5.

Show Facebook video URL

4 Copy the video URL

Copy Facebook Video URL

5 Paste the URL in your browser’s address bar and change the “www” to “m”

Replace "www" to "m" in Facebook video URL

6 When the page loads, right click and on the menu, click on “Inspect”

Click Inspect

7 A window pane on the right side will appear, click on “Network”

Click Network

8 Click on “Media” submenu and play the video, a filename appears on the right pane

9 Double click on the filename to open a window with the embedded video.

Click Media

10 Click on download arrow and wait for the download to complete or see below if download arrow is not visible.

Click download arrow

Hope this helps you finally get an offline copy of  Facebook videos from your memorable events!

Unfortunately it doesn’t work for me from the get go. Right clicking does NOT produce a “show video URL”. I also had tried to follow some of the same tips from another source and already know that when going to “inspect” there is NO tab for “Network”. Using Google Chrome. It may help to know the video I want is in the comment thread so there are no “three dots” to open either., because it’s in the comments and not the original thread.

Hi April, please click on the video itself until it shows you the video URL. After which you change the www to m, after which you will be able to Inspect. I hope that helps.

That is great. I usually use Allavsoft to download from youtube, facebook, vimeo, twitter etc sites.
Though it downloads private vimeo videos, it failed to download private facebook video. I will test your method,

Great article I’ve been following along, and when I get to the Load Unpacked Extension part, the icon that appears in chrome://extensions has something added to it. It’s a camera symbol inside orange circle. This is laid on top of my icon in the bottom right hand corner. What is that.

thanks for your awesome post. I am going to use extensions 6,7 which make me able to save and share any content to Facebook. My question: what difference does it make to directly share to Facebook, or using these extensions, in terms of the added Facebook ranking? I’ve heard that Facebook ranks are increased only if one directly shares posts (or any other engagement) to Facebook, and not by third party tools…

Hi this used to work brilliantly a couple of months ago but not any more – now when I change the www to m I lose my video and get taken to https://m.facebook.com/watch/?ref=watch_permalink. Tried with Chrome, Firefox and Edge – none worked. Is there any workaround for this?

It works with Firebox. Make sure you’re playing the video when you click “media”

Then copy and paste the link into a new window and voila. Right-click to download.

Hi not sure if you managed to download using Mozilla as suggested below, because I tried it and it failed (the video went to the permalink). I then went back to Chrome and tried changing the www to m, which directed me to permalink again, then I navigated to the FB group where the video is saved (i can see that the weblink is still showing the ‘m’). I played the video and proceed with the steps mentioned in this site (inspect etc) and managed to download it!

Yes. You’ll have to navigate back to the video once you switch to m.fb. But once you get there, these steps worked for me! March 18th 2021.

Hey, I’ve used this trick before and it’s genius and definitely worked a few months ago! I just tried now and not sure if FB has updated things, but it definitely did not work just now. As soon as I did step 5 (change the www to m) it redirected to a permalink of a completely different url, and not the video I’m trying to download. I also tried to ‘inspect’ the www. page using developer tools without luck. Any updates to this process that could help out?

I had this happen, and then in the search bar searched on my FB group name, which brought the page up, then I scrolled down to find my video and followed the download steps from there.

Yeah same here but, when it redirects to watch go ahead to search for the video manually, by searching for the closed group page and locating the subject video, once you’re there follow the process and you’re good to go.

It was not working for me.
I had to RIGHT CLICK the video file name that was in the right hand window (the window with all the code).
Then click OPEN IN NEW TAB
Then it was just my video on its own in a new tab.
Then I saw the three dots and could click DOWNLOAD VIDEO
    Hope that helps anyone.
Great article though, way better than all the sites out there that say they will do it for you.

Just to share with others, there were two hiccups for me. 1. On step 9 I had to make sure the video was playing for the filename to display & I had to play it more than once. 2. When I got to step 10 there was no download button, I had to right click & choose ‘save as’.

No new tab would pop-up in Microsoft Edge Browser. So, do this:
    > Copy the Video Link/URL
    > Open New Tab & Paste the Video URL
    > Right-Click the Video & Select “Save Video As”
    > Click Save
Ta da! Your Video is Downloaded.

When the videos are listed in a doc on a post then I don’t get the option for a video URL.

The videos are started in a text list on a post. Then it says > See More
I click See More and a popup page shows the videos. I right click on a video there and there is no option to show the URl. I see Inspect and Source options but no video URl.

I tried opening the video and copying that URL but it didn’t show in Inspect> Network> Media after I played it. It does show that it is playing in Media. I can see that but no file appears under Name.

Normal post videos work fine. I downloaded those.

It would be a true travesty if I couldn’t have accessed. Hope they intend for this to be a feature or else they don’t stop it without making an easier user option to download the videos. We need access to our own stuff. But I’m kind of glad it was like this actually because I got to learn more about internet stuff, something I mean to learn more about and this was a nice opportunity to get a little behind the architecture.

Hi, Thank you for this review. I also always wonder how to download videos from Facebook using my mobile phone. I found some web-based application that works well with my computer and I find it really helpful. You can also check wonderfox hd pro. This is a desktop tool but can convert downloaded videos to mobile phones. Like it, just try it.

It didn’t work for me at first because the group was private. It was my own group, so I just changed the settings to a closed group and it worked just fine.

Thanks Pinku though I avoid online sites where you would process personal videos so I came up with this different way albeit longer way of downloading the personal videos. Thanks!

Hi Helmy, glad it worked for you too. Unfortunately, I haven’t found a way yet to download a higher video quality. If there’s anyone out there who has discovered how, hopefully they can share it using this comments section.

Hi Michelle, is it a closed facebook group page or a secret facebook page? I think this will not work for secret group pages. If it’s from a closed facebook group page, let me know which particular step doesn’t work so I can try to help figure it out.

I opened that video in that group. After copying the url, I pasted it as it is on website Savefrom.net and downloaded it after selecting it’s format.

Hi Rumhan, yes there are sites out there that can be used to download videos from facebook but for those like me who are not comfortable in sending a private video in public servers, this method is what I prefer. 🙂

seems like the download is not as high of a resolution as the stream, is there any way to get the original 720p video?

Hi Jus tin, try to wait for the entire video to load before you download. I haven’t tried this so I’m not sure if that would work or if this is a limitation. Please let us know what you find out.
